About Me

My Journey From 9 To 5 To Lingerie

My name is Barbara Ann or BABS for short. I live on Long Island with my husband, son and two dogs. I have raised my two boys, now 21 and 22 and can live to tell about it. I survived a 23 year marriage, (to the same man) and have maintained a career. Nevertheless, my life is far from dull. We are definitely not your average family.

I have been very fortunate in my life to have had great parents who taught me well. Be strong and confident the old saying would go in my house "You can do anything if you set your mind to it" was the motto. And so true! I can still hear my father, an Englishman, who spent many years sailing the seas, saying, "Life is a journey, a challenge, an adventure, enjoy it for it may not be there tomorrow. He was right! I have also had the misfortune of losing both my parents inside two months of each other. I believe they could not live apart. And my father was correct. You need to live life to its fullest. And I believe he did!

I have done my best for the past 47 years to be a good parent, wife, employee and employer. However, at 47, I want more. My family, my husband and my two sons have been the most important reason for everything I do.

I have been a mother first and do not regret it for a single moment. But, as time marches on, it's now time to think about me, and what I want from my life and for myself. I have dedicated my life to providing a home, love and support for my family. But, as my father said, "It may not be here tomorrow."

I have been gainfully employed since I was old enough to have working papers. I've had various jobs through high school, college and then the medical industry. I studied Criminal Justice and after two children, I decided not to pursue that career.

I have managed a medical office for many years and have to say it has sucked the life out of me. Always covering shifts, open to close, worrying about budgets, corporate expectations and dealing with people. Although demanding, it has also been rewarding in many ways. Financially, it helped pay the bills and keep a roof over our heads.

It afforded my family health insurance and provided a sense of stability. Working in the medical field I have also met many people who have influenced and even changed my life. Compassion and understanding are two of my strengths and two of my weaknesses.

My decision-making process has been affected by both these traits. Sometimes in a positive manor, and sometimes not. However, I do believe I have also had the opportunity to help make a difference in other peoples lives. And that is also very important to me.

Life is never easy, especially being married to an over the road truck driver. You certainly learn the difference between a flat head and a phillips screwdriver very quickly. You adjust to the loss of a partner who is not home every night by engulfing yourself in something. For me, work, my boys and my home.

But, unfortunately like many other people out there, our lives changed dramatically when I became unemployed. A familiar story today and probably not much different than the news featured in the headlines today. Life changed!

However, in retrospect, this was just one in a series of events that changed our lives. The year before I became unemployed. My husband had extensive repair bills on his truck. It drained our bank account. We were in the red. My son, had an opportunity to study abroad, costly but what an opportunity. How could we say no? So we dug ourselves in a little deeper. Then there were the house issues. Our home was 168 years old and slowly became a money pit. The cesspool, the roof, the hot-water heater and the huge increase in our property taxes. So we as a family, tried our best to adapt to the lack of financial stability but in the end, reality set in and some difficult decisions had to be made.

Family support was the key to our decision-making process, We chose to relocate, and downsize. The home I loved left behind to open a new chapter in our lives. Who knew it was going to be such a challenge. I wanted desperately to go back to work. To feel productive, to contribute and to utilize my skills and talents, but another job, where I am dedicating myself to someone else's dream was not what I wanted this time. My life events had brought me to a crossroad in my life. It was time to choose. Live my life, pursue my dreams or do it all over again? I refused to go down that path again. If my choices, good and bad have brought me here to this point in my life, then this is my opportunity to pursue my passion. Rewrite the BABS script of life. The chance to be me. From a medical office manager to self-employed. And not only self-employed but the freedom to work anywhere. My anywhere would be from Savannah, Georgia. And not from 9 to 5. Making such a change would be stepping outside my "norm." But what did I have to lose? Another 25 years of work! Why not make it enjoyable and something that would make me happy. Happiness and financial success, what a concept.

So I have a concept but how do I make it a reality? I love fashion, and I love lingerie! My dresser drawers and closets are full of items that I have purchased over the last 25 years. I love to look at all the new items available. Who is wearing what and where did they get it?

So,I decided that I would invest my time in helping others feel the joy that dressing well and feeling good is possible at any age. For me, personally it is a very empowering and simple means of expressing how you feel. Feeling good is what every woman wants. And some women need a little help getting started. I want to make a living doing what I love! Being self employed and working for me. So, how can I do that?

SIMPLE it's a philosophy.

S-strong

I-independent

M-motivated

P-prepare

L-live life

E-empower yourself

You can live it and reap the rewards of choosing to pursue your dreams and feeling successful. How do I achieve this goal? I have always believed in making it SIMPLE. Be strong and independent, find your motivation and prepare to meet your goals. If you do you will live better and feel empowered by your decisions. I have gotten lost along the path of life and became complacent. A very robotic existence. With the opportunity of being unemployed I have made a decision to change my life. I choose to accept the challenge of a new goal and begin a new journey in my life.

Self-employment.

If I could run someone else's business successfully, then why not my own? So I started my research and found SBI, Sight Build It.
